One gland. Behind one eye.

The chapter nobody believes until they look it up — and the one place this book gives a flat instruction.

There is a toad in the Sonoran Desert about seven inches long, the largest native to the United States. It spends most of the year underground. It comes up with the summer rains, and for a few weeks it is everywhere, and then it is gone again.

Behind each eye it has a parotoid gland. Every toad has those. They are a defence — a bad taste, a warning, a reason to be dropped rather than eaten.

This one's gland contains 5-MeO-DMT, and Incilius alvarius is the only animal known to produce it in quantity.

The experienceShort and total

Onset is under thirty seconds. The peak lasts roughly five to fifteen minutes. That is the whole thing — shorter than a bus ride, and by a wide margin the most complete departure described anywhere in this book.

Survey work from Johns Hopkins found people rating it among the most personally meaningful experiences of their lives, at rates comparable to the psilocybin studies. Whatever is happening in those fifteen minutes, people do not describe it as small.

Three things this page will say plainly

One. You cannot lick it.

The secretion also contains bufadienolides, which are cardiotoxic. The lore is wrong, it is repeated constantly, and the mistake is genuinely dangerous. Whatever you have heard about licking a toad, put it down.

Two. Kambo is not this.

Kambo comes from a different frog, carries a different chemistry, and is not a psychedelic at all. The two get conflated constantly because both involve an amphibian. That is the entire similarity.

Three. The animal does not need to be involved.

The synthetic compound is chemically identical, cleaner, standardized, and requires no wild toad. The book's position here is unusually direct: there is no argument for the animal.

The problem the toad did not ask for

Modern practice traces to Albert Most's 1984 pamphlet. Since then, and especially in the last decade, collectors have been milking wild populations for a molecule a chemist can make more cleanly in an afternoon.

The toad is being harmed by its own reputation. It is a desert animal with a narrow range and a short season above ground, and it is now famous.

There is a version of this subject that treats every source as sacred and untouchable. This page is not that. The molecule is remarkable. The animal is not required. Use the synthetic and leave the toad alone.

One species, one gland, one molecule — and a conservation problem created entirely by how interesting people find it.

A note on the numbers below. Doses and timings are reported from the published clinical and toxicological literature, and they are here so you can read a headline or a trip report accurately. This is education, not instruction, and it is not medical advice.

EXPERIENCE

5-MeO-DMT, from the toad

The shortest and steepest experience on this site. Vaporized secretion from Incilius alvarius, somewhere between six and eighteen milligrams of 5-MeO-DMT. Onset is under thirty seconds. The peak lasts five to fifteen minutes. Most people are back inside 20 to 45 minutes. There is no window in which to change your mind.

The stages

  1. 0–30 secondsThe Rush

A sound like rising pressure and the body going somewhere without you. People frequently do not finish the exhale.

  2. 5–15 minThe Peak

For most, no imagery at all. White or golden light, and the complete absence of anybody present to observe it. This compound produces total ego dissolution at higher rates than anything else that has been measured.

  3. 20–45 minReintegration

Coming back into a body that feels borrowed. Weeping and laughing are both common and neither one means very much.

Core sensory and psychological effects

  • Total ego dissolution. Not “the boundaries blurred.” The self is reported as simply absent, which means there is nobody there to be frightened.
  • Non-visual. Unlike DMT and its famous geometry, this is usually light and presence rather than pictures.
  • Loss of body control. People go limp or rigid. A sitter physically holding you is standard practice, not theater.
  • Emotional discharge on return. Crying, laughing and shouting, in any combination and any order.
  • Afterglow. Studies of naturalistic use report sustained gains in life satisfaction and drops in depression and stress weeks later.
Good

The most reliably complete mystical experience anyone has measured in a laboratory, an afterglow that persists for weeks, and the whole thing is over before lunch.

Bad

No warning and no exit, physical collapse, terror with nobody present to experience it, and real cardiac and serotonin-syndrome risk that makes screening and a sitter non-negotiable.

One more thing, in the same spirit as the peyote request. The toad is under pressure from demand. Synthetic 5-MeO-DMT is the identical molecule and leaves the animal out of it entirely.

Chapter Four is short, and it is the one readers most often check for themselves because it sounds invented. It is not.
